Hey marketers and data heads: heads up! Next week is a good week to tell your boss you’re taking “enrichment time off.” We totally support using this excuse to take afternoons off and go to baseball games, or using it to let your boss know you won’t be at work on a Friday, when you’re actually planning to hit the slopes early for a long ski weekend. “Enrichment time”. But regarding next week, we’re actually talking about legitimate, professional, guilt free, educational enrichment time at two web analytics conferences happening at the same place in San Jose — next week! You’ve heard of eMetrics, a premiere event for marketing and website analytics…

Our friends at Wider Funnel and WhichTestWon.com were surprised to find that an unconventional left-hand placement of the add to cart button on BabyAge.com outperformed right-hand placement in an A/B split test, achieving a 16.7% higher conversion rate.
The discovery was surprising because it seems 99.9% of online stores place the cart button on the right hand side, and you’d think that customers have been conditioned to look for the cart button there…

According to Techcrunch, app store veteran, UrbanSpoon, has officially launched their iPad app. I agree with them in that the iPad app will not be useful for quick dinner solutions (like it is when firing up the app on an iPhone), however the iPad app will be useful for longer, more thoughtful decisions. Details of the UrbanSpoon iPad app below:

Let’s start by asking one of the most important questions in conversion rate optimization (CRO):
A good question.

- Checklists to print and check off as you go
I’ll share the same processes that I use to consistently boost my clients’ conversion rates – sometimes even doubling or tripling them…

I’ve written some posts on A/B testing and split testing that have seen spam from people purporting to be from Performable. Personally, I find it surprising that a VC backed company would bother with poor quality blackhat tactics like such obvious comment spam, so I’m wondering if it’s not someone with an axe to grind against them. They’re not even in public beta yet though, so perhaps some marketing director there just purchased a really crummy SEO package trying to save some bucks…

It’s been an amazing journey. Five years ago today, Google acquired Urchin Software Corporation. At the time, we had no idea how popular Google Analytics would become. Whole books have been written about the ins-and-outs of landing page design.
Each element on the page, each word, graphic, block of text and link, contributes to conversion, or lack thereof. However, this complexity can be boiled down to six essentials.
If you’re designing a land page, or revamping those pages you have, make sure you cover these six points:
1. State Your Value Proposition
What is it? What value are you providing the customer? What is in it for them?
Your value proposition should be part of the ad text, and it definitely needs to appear on your landing pages…

"What is the difference between a metric and a key performance indicator (KPI)?"
"What is a dimension in analytics?"
"What is segmentation?"
"Are goals metrics?"
And many more.
There seems to be genuine confusion about the simplest, most foundational, parts of web metrics / analytics…

Most pay per click performance measurement has been at the keyword level i.e. which keyword resulted in conversion.
The problem is this is a blunt measurement tool. It would also be great to know what steps led up to that keyword. For example, did the visitor search on a number of different keyword variations before s/he arrived at that particular keyword. Up until now, this type of tracking has been painful to implement…
